Henry Stuart, Lord Darnely.
Mary’s second husband’s name was Henry Sruart, Lord Darnely. It was said that few people thought that Mary made a good decision in marrying him, even though Mary, in the beginning supposedly, loved him. Mary soon got pregnant and had a baby boy that she named James. Apparently her happiness did not last, Darnely became jealous of David Rizzo, Mary’s secretary. Rizzo and Mary often played cards together. One day while they were playing, Darnely and a few men came in the room and stabbed Rizzo to death. Mary received a gift in 1567, her new born son, who would be king someday, but first she would end her dangerous marriage with Darnely.
February 10, 1567 people were woken by an explosion. A house had blown up, with Darnley’s dead body found in the garden. It appeared that he had run outside then been strangled to death. James Hepburn, Earl Brothwell, was believed to have killed Darnley because he was ambitious and wanted the crown. However, he had a large army so when he was tried in court, everyone was so intimidated by his man that he walked away a free man. Brothwell asked for Mary’s hand in marriage many times, eventually, when he took Mary to his castle in Dunbar, she consented to marry him. The wedding was held at Holyroodhouse on May 15, 1567.The people didn’t agree with Mary’s choice, she had made a grave mistake. The Scots nobles put together an army, the two sides met at Carberry Hill in June 1567. A battle never took place, Brothwell abandoned Mary, who was taken prisoner, and his in Denmark, where he finally died in 1578, out-of-his-mind-insane. Mary was held in Lochleven Castle.July 1567 she agreed to give up the crown to her son James who became King James VI. Since James was still a baby, Mary’s half brother, the Earl of Moray, became king of Scotland as regent. Mary, after ten months, then escaped with the help of Willie Douglas and his brother. She slipped out to a boat disguised as a servant girl. Mary fled South to England. She never saw Scotland or her beloved son again and Mary hoped against hope that Queen Elizabeth would help her. Another mistake on her part. Elizabeth didn’t want Mary, and didn’t have an idea as to what to do with her. There was the possibility that it wasn’t safe to send her back to France, Scotland, or to any other country.
The English government saw Mary as a rival and threat to their queen. Elizabeth had many enemies. England’s biggest threat was Spain, they might try to remove Elizabeth from the throne and put Mary in her place as queen as of England. The two queens were distant cousins, Elizabeth the daughter of King Henry VIII, Mary granddaughter of Henry’s sister Margaret Tudor. If Elizabeth were to die with no heir, Mary and her son James would be next in line for the throne. Elizabeth kept Mary imprisoned for 18 years, in all that time the two queens never met though. In 1570 the Pope said that Elizabeth wasn’t the rightful queen of England, many Catholics now believe that Mary was the lawful queen of England. English Catholics were accused of plotting against Elizabeth, there were spies and plotters everywhere you looked.
In 1586 English spies uncovered a new plan to kill Elizabeth and make Mary their queen, with help from Spain. The plotters were found, captured, tortured and executed. In Scotland her son James was 20 years old and doing little to help his mother. Mary was found guilty of treason. Her sentence was death. Elizabeth was reluctant to sign the death order but eventually did so.
Elizabeth never married, therefor, when she died she had no heir. James VI of Scotland, Mary’s son, soon became James I of England as well. Mary was buried in Peterborough Cathedral. In 1612 James had a new tomb for Mary made in London. It was close to Elizabeth I.
February 8 1587, at Fotheringhay Castle, Mary was executed, her head chopped off with an axe
